Surf's Up (1971)In the fall of 1970, the Beach Boys hired Jack Rieley as their manager, a DJ who had impressed the band with his falsified credentials (a supposed Peabody Award-winning stint as NBC bureau chief inPuerto Rico) and ideas on how to regain respect from American music fans and critics. His first initiative was to have the Beach Boys record songs with more socially aware lyrics. He also organized a guest appearance at a Grateful Dead concert in April 1971, further enhancing the Beach Boys' once-lacking hip credentials.

Carl and the Passions - "So Tough" (1972)The title of the album was a reference to an early band Carl Wilson had been in as a teenager. Joining him was drummer Ricky Fataar (Dennis Wilson had suffered a debilitating hand accident). The album sees The Beach Boys entering a period of earthy arrangements, cycling through all manner of roots-based rock.

Love You (1977)Considered by some to be The Beach Boys' last truly great album, others have found the release's unconventional sound difficult to swallow. However, Brian Wilson fans continue to claim for it an awkward beauty and high level of musical creativity and it remained the last favourably reviewed Beach Boys studio album until the release of 2012´s That's Why God Made the Radio. Peter Buck of R.E.M. called it his favourite Beach Boys album, on liner notes of the CD re-release.
